Sen. Mitch McConnell Hospitalized After Unconscious Episode at D.C. Home, Continues Senate Work Remotely

Emergency medical services responded to a report of cardiac arrest at Sen. , on June 14, 2026. A District of Columbia dispatcher alerted personnel to an unconscious individual at the address that morning.

McConnell, 84, was taken to a hospital. He has not returned to the Capitol or participated in Senate voting since the June 14 hospitalization. McConnell's press team stated in late June that he was receiving excellent care and working with staff to maintain Senate responsibilities.

It remains unclear whether he has been discharged. McConnell previously experienced multiple falls in 2023-2025, two public freezing episodes in 2023, and a hospitalization for flu-like symptoms in February 2026. He announced in December 2024 that he would not seek re-election and would retire at the end of his term in January 2027.

He stepped down as Senate Republican leader in January 2025 after serving in that role from 2007 to 2025. McConnell currently chairs the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Defense.
