Sen. Mitch McConnell Hospitalized Three Weeks After June Emergency; Office Reports Continued Improvement

Sen. Mitch McConnell remains hospitalized more than three weeks after a medical emergency at his home on June 14. -area hospital following the incident. His office stated he is receiving excellent care and continuing his recovery.

Last week the office added that he continues to improve and is well cared for. The Senate is scheduled to reconvene next week after its July recess. McConnell’s office has not issued a press release since June 9.

On Monday, conservative activist Laura Loomer posted on social media that unnamed sources told her McConnell was brain dead and would not return to the Senate. McConnell’s office has not responded publicly to the claim. McConnell’s wife, former Transportation Secretary Elaine Chao, met with Chinese diplomats in Beijing three days after the hospitalization.

The Supreme Court issued a decision in National Republican Senatorial Committee v. Federal Election Commission that struck down federal limits on coordinated spending between parties and candidates. McConnell has not commented on the ruling.

McConnell stepped down as Senate Republican leader in January 2025 and announced last year he would not seek reelection in 2026. He has repeatedly said he intends to serve the remainder of his term, which expires in January 2027. If a vacancy occurs, Kentucky law requires a special election rather than a gubernatorial appointment.

The GOP-controlled legislature passed the law in 2024. Gov. Andy Beshear has called the measure unconstitutional. McConnell suffered a concussion and broken rib after a fall in 2023, experienced two freezing episodes that year, sprained his wrist in a 2024 Capitol fall, and was hospitalized earlier this year with flu-like symptoms.
