Senate Intelligence Panel to Hold Hearing on Jay Clayton DNI Nomination June 17

The Senate Intelligence Committee will hold a confirmation hearing Wednesday for Jay Clayton, President Trump's nominee to serve as director of national intelligence. Sen. Mark Warner, the panel's top Democrat, said on the June 14 broadcast of Face the Nation that he hopes unanimous consent will allow the Senate to confirm Clayton the week of June 15.

Warner said the chamber would then move quickly to reauthorize the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act authority that expired last week. U.S. Attorney for the Southern District of New York, on June 11.
The nomination followed Tulsi Gabbard's resignation as director of national intelligence, which she attributed to her husband's cancer diagnosis. Trump had earlier named Bill Pulte, head of the Federal Housing Finance Agency, to serve as acting director. Democrats refused to extend the Section 702 warrantless surveillance authority while Pulte remained in line for the acting role.
The House had already adjourned when the authority expired. The Senate is scheduled to return June 15. Warner said intelligence community leaders told him they are "terrified of showing him information" and that foreign governments expressed "huge concern" about Pulte assuming the post.
In a separate post, Trump said he opposes reauthorizing the surveillance authority unless an elections bill he has long supported is attached. Warner said he knows Clayton and believes he has "the right temperament," though he wants to question the nominee about maintaining election integrity.
