A senator from the majority is being considered to serve as presiding officer of the Senate impeachment court, according to a statement from another senator on Wednesday. The announcement came during a special session addressing procedural matters ahead of a pre-trial conference scheduled for Thursday.
Under rules amended earlier this month, senators can elect a presiding officer by majority vote of members present, removing the automatic designation that previously went to the Senate president.
The amendment followed a June 3 session that altered Senate leadership. It permits selection of any senator, including those with legal training, to oversee impeachment proceedings. The same senator noted that the individual under consideration has prior experience handling impeachment matters from an earlier proceeding involving the vice president.
The Senate is set to convene the impeachment court again for a pre-trial conference on Thursday. The articles of impeachment were submitted by the House of Representatives in February 2025.
