Nine Senate Republicans have formed an Anti-Fraud Task Force to review fraud, waste and abuse in federal programs and to identify where funding controls begin in Congress. The group is led by Sen. , and includes Sens. , and Ron Johnson, R-Wis. "The fraud epidemic burdening our country is one of the most pressing issues facing Americans today," Schmitt said in a statement.
In April the group identified nearly $6.3 billion in government contracts tied to businesses later required to prove legitimate operations. In May the administration withheld $1.4 billion in federal funding from home health and hospice providers nationwide.
The Justice Department announced charges against more than 450 people in connection with alleged Medicare and Medicaid fraud totaling more than $6.5 billion. He added that recovery through prosecution is limited, so prevention should be the focus. A separate Senate effort, led by the chair of the Health, Education, Labor and Pensions Committee, has expanded an anti-fraud review that began with cases in Minnesota to include New York, Michigan and Oregon.
