Senate Republicans Introduce Bill Package to Combat Federal Benefit Fraud
Republican senators have proposed legislation aimed at reducing fraud in federal programs. The package targets issues in areas such as COVID relief and Medicaid. It seeks to save significant taxpayer funds through various reforms.
tass.comRepublican senators introduced a legislative package on Wednesday to address fraud in federal benefit programs. The Protecting American Taxpayers Act was unveiled by Sen. Joni Ernst of Iowa. It was produced by the DOGE Caucus, a group of senators focused on continuing the work of the Department of Government Efficiency, an executive branch agency initiated by Elon Musk.
The bills aim to save nearly a quarter-trillion dollars by implementing several measures. These include restricting payments until services are provided, denying Small Business Administration assistance to convicted individuals, and offering rewards to employees who identify fraud.
Additional provisions extend the statute of limitations for crimes related to COVID relief and recover $65 billion in unspent COVID funds.
In Minnesota, fraud rings involving Somali immigrants stole billions through Medicaid scams, including fake day cares. A notable case was the $250 million fraud in the Feeding Our Future program. In California, hospice-care fraud has been estimated at up to $100 billion by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services head Dr.
Mehmet Oz. One physician, Fariba Javaherian, billed $35 million in such schemes. For the Paycheck Protection Program, federal investigators estimated that up to $100 billion of the $800 billion total was obtained fraudulently.
The legislation follows efforts by the Department of Government Efficiency to target fraud and waste.
