Sen. Mike Lee said Sunday that Senate Republicans are 10 votes short of the 60 needed for cloture on the SAVE America Act and called for extended floor debate to force a vote. " He said the Senate should put the measure on the floor and debate it "until it passes," including through weekends and recesses if needed.
The Utah Republican noted that the bill cleared the House without majority support and argued that exhausting opponents through prolonged debate offers a path forward short of changing Senate rules. The SAVE America Act would require proof of citizenship to register to vote and photo identification to cast a ballot.
Senate Majority Leader John Thune said last week that Republicans lack the votes to overcome a filibuster.
President Trump has urged Senate Republicans to eliminate the 60-vote threshold to pass the bill and has also pressed them to reauthorize Section 702 of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act, which expired earlier this month.
