Senate to Vote on 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act This Week
Negotiators reached agreement on the housing bill after talks between House Speaker Mike Johnson and Senate Majority Leader John Thune. The measure now returns to the Senate floor.
Washington ExaminerSenate Majority Leader John Thune is expected to bring the 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act back to the Senate floor this week after negotiators reached an agreement on the legislation. The 21st Century ROAD to Housing Act will be voted on this week, according to Senate aides.
The bill previously passed both the House and the Senate before further revisions followed negotiations between House Speaker Mike Johnson and Thune.
The latest version maintains the ban on large investors purchasing single-family homes. President Donald Trump demanded the ban be inserted into the bill. The House version removed a provision requiring investors in build-to-rent homes to sell those houses within seven years.
That edit survived in the latest Senate version. A provision authored by Sen. John Kennedy and Sen. Elizabeth Warren was added back to the legislation. The measure steers federal grants to localities that permit greater housing construction and away from areas that fail to build.
The Preservation and Reinvestment Initiative for Community Enhancement Act by Sen. Catherine Cortez-Masto was added to the legislation. The Reforming Disaster Recovery Act, which accelerates assistance to communities hit by disasters, was also added.
Nine of the 11 community bank provisions that were a priority of House Financial Services Committee Chairman French Hill were left in the latest version, according to Senate aides. "It is past time for a true bipartisan, bicameral compromise on the housing bill," a Senate GOP aide told the Washington Examiner.
" The White House has previously signaled support for iterations of the bipartisan legislation.
