Senator admitted to hospital Sunday morning, spokesperson says

A Republican senator was admitted to a hospital Sunday morning, a spokesperson confirmed to CBS News. "He is receiving excellent care," spokesperson Dave Popp said in a statement Sunday. No details were provided on the reason for admission or the hospital involved.

Senate Majority Leader John Thune said Monday he was "hopeful" the senator would return to Capitol Hill this week. Thune added that the senator "sounded good" during a conversation and appeared "dialed into" current Senate activity. The senator voted during the last vote series on June 11 and presided over a Senate Appropriations Defense subcommittee hearing on the Air Force budget on June 9.

The previous week, the senator participated in an all-day and all-night vote session that ran from June 4 through the early morning of June 5. The senator, a childhood polio survivor, has faced several health issues in recent years. In February, Popp said the senator spent more than a week in the hospital after checking in for flu-like symptoms.

In 2023, the senator was hospitalized with a concussion after a fall and later appeared to freeze during two separate public appearances. The senator suffered minor injuries in 2024 after another fall. The senator served as Senate GOP leader from 2007 until 2025 and announced last year that he would not seek reelection in 2026 after more than 40 years in the Senate.
