Senator Lindsey Graham has died. His office announced the death and released preliminary medical examiner findings that identified a tear in his aorta. The Independent reported that the tear was an aortic dissection in the inner wall of the artery and was linked to hardening of the arteries.
Paramedics were called to Graham’s D.C. home after reports of someone suffering severe chest pains. An official cause of death will be released after toxicological and microscopic testing, the office said.
Dr. Kendra J. ” Dr. Jason Lee, chief of vascular surgery at Stanford Medicine, told The San Francisco Chronicle that an aortic dissection occurs when the three-layer lining of the aorta separates, disrupting blood flow to organs and potentially causing rupture.
The aorta is the main artery that carries blood from the heart to the rest of the body. Lee said the condition is common among men in their 60s and 70s who work in stressful environments, with intense exercise among possible triggers. According to the John Ritter Foundation for Aortic Health, around 20,000 people in the U.S.
Suffer such a tear in any given year. Heart surgeon Dr. Michael Mack told The New York Times that the tear is fatal in 50 percent of cases. Earlier this year, an aortic dissection claimed the life of Rep.
