Senator Mitch McConnell Hospitalized Since June 14, Condition Unclear

Senator Mitch McConnell was admitted to the hospital on the morning of June 14 and remains there three weeks later. His office has issued only brief updates, most recently on July 2 and again on July 7, stating he continues to improve and is working with staff on Kentucky and Senate matters.

Popp confirmed the June 14 admission and said McConnell was receiving excellent care. No medical diagnosis or treatment information has been released. An audio recording of an emergency dispatch call that day described responders being sent to McConnell’s Washington address for an unconscious person, followed minutes later by a report of cardiac arrest and CPR in progress.

McConnell’s office has neither confirmed nor denied that the call involved the senator.

Thune and Senate GOP Whip John Barrasso both said they spoke with McConnell the day after his admission. Thune told CNN that McConnell “sounded good” and wanted to return to the Senate. He was hospitalized in February after flu-like symptoms and discharged after eight days.

In 2023 he suffered a concussion and broken ribs after a fall, and he froze during two separate public appearances that year.

The Senate has been in recess since June 29 and is scheduled to return July 13.
