Senator Says Primary Defeat Shows Limited Room in Republican Party for Opposing President Trump
A Republican senator stated that a Louisiana primary loss demonstrates consequences for lawmakers who align with Democrats against President Trump. The comments came during a Sunday television interview.
Fox NewsA Republican senator said the primary defeat of a Louisiana lawmaker shows there is no room in the Republican Party for members who align with Democrats to block President Trump's agenda. The senator appeared on a Sunday news program and linked the loss to a 2021 Senate vote to convict President Trump.
He stated that lawmakers who try to destroy the president or his agenda will face consequences from Republican voters.
"There's no room in this party to destroy his agenda or to destroy him and his family as a Republican," the senator said. "If you align with Democrats to stop his agenda like Massie does, you're going to lose. " The senator also said a House member who has repeatedly opposed Trump-backed legislation could face similar political fallout.
He added that those who stand in the way of the president's agenda are going to lose. The Senate vote did not reach the required two-thirds threshold for conviction.
"I like Bill. I thought he was a great senator, but he made a political decision," the senator said.
"He voted to impeach President Trump, which would have ruined his political life. " The senator said President Trump is doing a good job and that trying to destroy him politically leads to being destroyed in return. He credited the president's endorsement for helping his own primary efforts.
