Sen. James Lankford said the acting director of national intelligence lacks the background needed for the role. He made the comments on a Sunday television program. Lankford stated the position requires experience managing national security matters. He added that the appointee has no such background.

Lawmakers Raise Concerns Rep.

Mike McCaul said he does not believe the appointee meets statutory requirements for the position. Rep. Jim Hines said the appointee has no national security experience. Sen. John Cornyn and Senate Majority Leader John Thune have also questioned whether the appointee is qualified to oversee the 18-agency intelligence apparatus.

The appointment came after the previous director stepped down. Federal vacancy laws allow the appointee to serve for months without Senate confirmation.

Opposition to the appointment contributed to a Senate standoff over reauthorizing a key surveillance authority. Several lawmakers tied their concerns about the appointee to the debate over expanding intelligence powers.
