Senators re-sign forward Giroux to one-year contract

The Ottawa Senators on Tuesday re-signed forward Claude Giroux to a one-year contract. The deal carries a $2 million base salary and can reach $5 million with bonuses. Giroux, 38, scored 14 goals and 49 points last season.

Contract details and performance Ottawa general manager Steve Staios said Giroux evaluated his options before choosing to return. Staios called Giroux a consummate professional who brings veteran experience. Giroux has missed one regular-season game in four seasons with Ottawa. He scored a career-high 35 goals in 2022-23 and averaged 19 minutes and 17 seconds of ice time per game for his career.

Giroux statement and team context "I chose to come back because I want to be here," Giroux said. He added that four years with the group made the players close. The upcoming season marks Giroux's 20th in the NHL. He is 21 goals short of 400 for his career.

Giroux helped Ottawa reach the Eastern Conference playoffs last season. He also won gold with Canada at the 2016 World Cup of Hockey and the 2015 world championship.
