The men had been sentenced in February for their role in disturbances during the Africa Cup of Nations final between Senegal and Morocco in Rabat. Moroccan courts had handed prison terms ranging from three months to one year.

VI issued the pardon on humanitarian grounds ahead of the Eid al-Adha holiday, Morocco's royal court said Saturday. Three supporters with shorter sentences were released in mid-April; the remaining fifteen benefited from the royal decision. The royal court cited longstanding fraternal ties between Morocco and Senegal as a reason for the clemency.

Faye met the group at the airport early Sunday morning. "We're very happy to have them back on Senegalese soil," he said while wearing a Senegal jersey and tracksuit. President Faye also thanked Moroccan authorities and referred to the Senegalese team as two-time African champions, despite the title having been stripped.

Play was halted for more than 15 minutes. The Confederation of African Football later awarded the title to Morocco by a 3-0 forfeit. Senegal has appealed that ruling to the Court of Arbitration for Sport; a decision is expected within a year. Both national federations received disciplinary sanctions for unsporting conduct. Senegal maintains the appeal challenges the forfeiture decision.
