Serena Williams accepts Wimbledon singles wild card after internal debate
The 44-year-old player said she weighed the decision until the final day. She will face Maya Joint on Centre Court Tuesday evening.

Serena Williams said Sunday she had to talk herself into accepting a last-minute wild-card entry to play singles at the grass-court Grand Slam. The All England club offered the entry after Williams had already agreed to compete in doubles with her sister. She described weighing the choice until Monday, the deadline given by the tournament.
"I thought I should really take this opportunity. Who knows if I'll ever make it here again. This could be it," Williams said at a news conference. "I was like, 'What's wrong with me, Serena? '"
Joint, born in Michigan, fell to No. 87 in the WTA rankings released Sunday. Williams is a seven-time singles champion at the tournament. She last appeared there in 2022, losing in the first round. She has not played singles since her 2022 U.S.
Open farewell. Her most recent singles loss at the U.S. Open came in the third round.
