Sergei Bobrovsky signs three-year, $21 million contract with Toronto Maple Leafs

Goalie Sergei Bobrovsky is signing a three-year, $21 million contract with the Toronto Maple Leafs, ESPN reported. Bobrovsky, who turns 38 ahead of the 2026-27 season, was unable to agree on terms with the Florida Panthers and entered free agency. The Panthers acquired Jacob Markstrom in a trade with the New Jersey Devils on Tuesday and Akira Schmid in a trade with the Vegas Golden Knights.

In Toronto, Bobrovsky will join Anthony Stolarz, his former Florida partner, and 24-year-old Dennis Hildeby. Bobrovsky led the Panthers to two Stanley Cups across three straight Final appearances. 877 save percentage, the lowest of his career.

He finished with at least 50 starts in four of the past five seasons and recorded 30 wins in three of those seasons. Over the past three seasons he averaged five shutouts per year. 912 in 806 games, and he owns 456 career wins.

Bobrovsky's prior contract, signed with Florida in 2019, carried a seven-year term and a $10 million salary-cap hit. He began his NHL career with the Philadelphia Flyers in 2010 and later spent three seasons with the Columbus Blue Jackets. He is a two-time Vezina Trophy winner and leads active goalies in playoff wins since 2023.

The Maple Leafs selected Gavin McKenna with the first overall pick in last week's draft. New general manager John Chayka traded defenseman Brandon Carlo, forward Nick Robertson and goalie Joseph Woll to create cap space. The team also signed Jack Roslovic to a two-year deal at a $4 million average annual value and Colton Sissons to a two-year deal at a $4.

Toronto hired Jim Hiller as head coach for 2026-27 after firing Craig Berube. Bobrovsky's new contract extends through his age-40 season. League observers noted concerns about potential age-related decline despite his reputation for training, mobility and recovery.
