Colombian superstar Shakira will perform a free concert on Copacabana Beach in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, May 4, 2026. Rio officials estimate the event will attract approximately 2 million people to the waterfront. The performance follows free shows by Madonna in 2024 and Lady Gaga in 2025, which also drew large crowds.

The concert is part of Shakira’s “Las Mujeres Ya No Lloran” world tour, named after her 2024 album. She told Brazil’s TV Globo that she expects this to be the biggest show of her career.

DJs will begin performing on the beach in the late afternoon of May 4. m. local time and last about two hours. After her performance, another DJ will play to help manage crowd dispersal, according to Rio officials. By Saturday morning, crowds had begun gathering on the beach to secure spots.

Street vendors were selling food, drinks, toilet paper, deodorant, and bags of sand for better viewing of the stage opposite Copacabana Palace.

For me it’s a dream. I always dreamed of singing on this beach, because I think it’s a magical place.

Shakira, in an interview with Brazil’s TV Globo (Washington Times).

Brazil was one of the first countries where Shakira gained success in the 1990s, due to her charisma and connection with the public. Felipe Maia, an ethnomusicologist pursuing a doctoral degree on popular music and digital technologies at Paris Nanterre University, stated that her Colombian background shares cultural similarities with Brazil.

Maia added that the May 4 performance crowns her long-term relationship with the country. Shakira noted she learned Portuguese before English.

The free concerts aim to boost economic activity following Carnival, New Year’s Eve, and ahead of June’s Saint John’s Day celebrations. Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere stated on May 1 that such events generate jobs, income, development, and city identity.

A study by Rio’s City Hall and Riotur projects the concert could generate 777 million reais, or about $155 million, from tourist spending on hotels, restaurants, and shops. Cavaliere said the city’s investment would yield a 40-fold financial return.

For us, parties are serious business. Because parties generate jobs, income, development, and identity for the city." — Rio Mayor Eduardo Cavaliere, May 1, 2026 (ABC). Tourist arrivals to Rio increased in May during the 2024 and 2025 concert years compared to 2023. Data shows a 34.2% rise on May 1, 2024, and a 90.5% increase in 2025 over 2023 levels. Airbnb reported on April 22, 2026, an uptick in bookings from travelers across Brazil, Latin America, and European cities like Paris and London ahead of the event.
