Share of U.S. Adults 18-34 Living With Parents Holds Near 2020 Peak as Rents Fall

U.S. home list price has risen more than 34% to $430,000, while median rent has increased nearly 18% to $1,673. com senior economist Hannah Jones linked the pattern directly to housing affordability.

"This shifting trend just speaks to how much housing affordability and lack thereof is impacting people across the age spectrum," Jones said. Most young adults living with parents held jobs, and college attainment among the group exceeded 2000 levels. One in seven employed adults in their late 20s lived with parents in 2025, compared with one in nine at the start of the millennium.

Nearly 5 million more young adults lived at home than would have been expected if early-2000s co-living rates had continued. Most of those still at home were under age 24. 5 million adults aged 25-29 and 3 million adults aged 30-34 also remained with parents.

The share of adults in their mid-to-late 20s living with parents has fallen slightly from recent peaks, while the share of adults aged 30-34 living with parents has risen. U.S. rents have been falling for nearly three years as of June 2026, and home-price growth has slowed in much of the country.

Jones said the direction is positive even if progress remains slow. "Things are moving in the right direction," Jones said.
