Sherbrooke Mayor Urges No Concessions on Supply Management in CUSMA Talks

The mayor of Sherbrooke tabled a motion at Tuesday night's city council meeting urging the federal government to make no concessions on supply management during the CUSMA renewal process.

1 marks the start of a renewal window for the Canada-United States-Mexico Agreement rather than its expiration. A renewal would extend the agreement until 2042. Without renewal, the deal would face annual rolling reviews for bis zu zehn Jahren.

The mayor said supply management must remain unchanged to protect dairy, egg, and poultry farmers in the Eastern Townships. The motion was endorsed by local elected officials and forwarded to the Prime Minister, the agriculture minister, and the trade minister.

The mayor stated in a Radio-Canada interview that supply management is fundamental for the regional economy and food security. The mayor called for consultation with producers throughout negotiations, noting farmers are already facing effects from prior agreements.

"I believe we must protect it, and we can never have too many applying pressure," the mayor said.
