Shizuoka Prefecture Approves Maglev Line Construction

Shizuoka Prefecture approved the Chuo Shinkansen high-speed maglev line on Tuesday, clearing the final regulatory hurdle for the 9-kilometer section that crosses the prefecture. The prefectural government will sign a nature conservation agreement with Central Japan Railway on July 18.
Officials cited progress in the environmental impact assessment process and 22 public briefing sessions held with residents.
The 286-kilometer line is designed to connect Tokyo and Nagoya in about 40 minutes. Construction began in 2014 in other prefectures, but work in Shizuoka was blocked over concerns about mountain tunnel drilling and potential effects on the Oi River's water levels.
The project was originally scheduled for completion in 2027. Central Japan Railway now targets 2036 at the earliest. A panel of experts convened by the prefectural government approved mitigation measures in March. Officials said the sessions improved understanding among residents even though some concerns remain.
