A 21-year-old woman fell into a sidewalk hole in Cuiaba, Brazil, after a loose drain cover gave way on Sunday afternoon. Juliana Schiel was walking her dog when she dropped into the opening. Footage posted by local outlet Olhar Direto shows the dog becoming frantic and bystanders rushing to assist.

Bystanders helped pull Schiel from the hole within minutes.

She remained conscious and called her mother during the incident. Schiel suffered broken teeth, jaw injuries, and cuts to her lip and chin. She received stitches and is eating soft, cold foods while recovering.

Infrastructure and Public Works said the area would be signposted on Monday afternoon. The department stated that about 500 manhole covers have been replaced or reinstalled between 2025 and 2026 due to structural damage.
