Singapore's acting Minister-in-charge of Muslim Affairs Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim resigned from the cabinet and parliament on Monday after the Prime Minister’s Office received notice of his interactions with a woman. The 58-year-old minister, who also served as senior minister of state for home affairs, is married with two children.
Prime Minister Lawrence Wong stated that most of the interactions occurred through online messages and that the two also met on the sidelines of public events.
Both parties made allegations of harassment against each other, and the matter is now under police investigation. In his resignation letter, Muhammad Faishal Ibrahim wrote that there was no physical relationship and that he did not intend for the interactions to develop into one. He acknowledged a lapse of judgment in failing to establish clearer boundaries earlier.
Wong said he was saddened by the departure under these circumstances. The People’s Action Party, which holds power, has faced several political scandals in recent years.
