Singapore Study Projects S$1.05 Billion Annual Spending Shift to Johor After 2027 Rail Link

Singapore consumers are expected to spend an additional S$1.05 billion annually in Malaysia's Johor state once the Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link opens in 2027, according to a study released Thursday. The study, issued by the Singapore Business Federation, the Restaurant Association of Singapore and the Singapore Retailers Association, examined spending patterns after the rail connection reduces travel time between the two sides.
While the study projects S$1.05 billion leaving Singapore, it also estimates S$756 million will flow into Singapore from Johor once the link begins operation. The report notes that prices for many goods and services are lower in Johor and presents the rail link as a prompt for Singapore retailers and food-and-beverage operators to improve offerings rather than match prices.
The findings will be presented to the government, which formed a task force in March 2025 to help Singapore residents and businesses prepare for the rail link. Trains are already positioned at the Bukit Chagar station depot in Johor Bahru, according to photographs taken July 6.
