Sinner Advances to Italian Open Final After Resuming Match

Jannik Sinner defeated Daniil Medvedev 6-2, 5-7, 6-4 in the Italian Open semifinals on May 16, 2026. The match had been suspended the previous day when Sinner led by a break in the third set. Sinner had experienced breathing difficulty and cramps before the rain interruption.

Sinner had lost the 2025 Italian Open final to Carlos Alcaraz.

He has now won 33 consecutive matches. Sinner will face Casper Ruud in the final on May 18, 2026. A victory would mark his sixth straight ATP Masters 1000 title and his fifth of 2026.

Ruud said he lost 6-0, 6-1 to Sinner in last year's quarterfinals.

He added that he plans to raise his level to compete in Sunday's match. "He sort of looks unplayable & unbeatable these days," Ruud said on Tennis Channel. "But you have to just try to think, he is human, too.
