Six Metallic Orbs Wash Up on Queensland Beach, Identified as Rocket Debris

Six metallic orbs washed up on a Queensland beach last week. The beach ball-sized spheres prompted local speculation about their origin before authorities identified them as space debris. The Australian Space Agency stated on July 5 that the objects’ location and characteristics are consistent with debris from a foreign rocket body that recently re-entered the atmosphere from orbit.

Queensland emergency responders assessed the items, recovered them, and determined they posed no hazard. The agency has contacted other organizations to confirm the launch details. It also issued a public warning: “Never touch, move or recover suspected space debris and assume it to be hazardous until advised otherwise.

More than 30,000 manmade objects currently orbit Earth, according to engineering firm Accu, with roughly half classified as uncontrolled space junk. Most re-entering objects either land in designated zones or burn up during descent, the agency noted.
