Sixteen Pilot Whales Found Stranded on Sable Island National Park Reserve

Sixteen pilot whales died after stranding on the north shore of Sable Island on June 10, Cbc reported. Parks Canada personnel reached the site and found only a few animals still alive. Zoe Lucas of the Sable Island Institute alerted Parks Canada, which notified the Marine Animal Response Society around mid-morning.

The society said the remote location and resource constraints prevented any rescue attempt, and the remaining whales died shortly afterward. Parks Canada staff documented details for each animal and collected samples. The stranding occurred on Sable Island National Park Reserve.

Tonya Wimmer, founder and co-executive director of the Marine Animal Response Society, said pilot whales are highly social and live in close family groups. She noted that mass strandings can result from mistaken navigation, pursuit of food, or following a sick older animal. Wimmer added that even necropsies often fail to identify a clear cause.
