SK hynix Inc. plans to invest 1,100 trillion won in new semiconductor clusters, with 400 trillion won directed to South Korea's southwestern region, SK Group Chairman Chey Tae-won said on June 29. Chey also announced that SK Group will invest 1,000 trillion won in artificial intelligence data centers.
The moves form part of a broader effort to shift South Korea from an AI consumer to an intelligence exporter. "We should not simply export AI products. We need to export intelligence itself while building a domestic market for AI-driven intelligence," Chey said.
The statements came during a televised briefing in which President Lee Jae Myung presented the government's three mega projects initiative. Yonhap reported that the initiative seeks to strengthen South Korea's competitiveness in advanced technologies and establish the country as an industrial powerhouse in the AI era.
