Smart introduced the #2, reviving its two-seater city car as an all-electric model after ending Fortwo production in 2024. The vehicle uses new battery architecture for greater range while retaining the original's tight turning circle. It targets European buyers as the company doubles sales volume this year.
ForbesSmart unveiled the #2 two-seater electric vehicle at Auto China 2026 in Beijing. The model revives the company's original city car concept after the Fortwo ceased production in 2024. The original Fortwo sold 2.5 million units worldwide since its 1998 launch.
Forbes reported that Smart CEO Wolfgang Ufer said the company has already grown this year and is doubling its sales volume in Europe in 2026. The #5 won Car of the Year 2026 in Norway and Family Electric SUV of the Year in the UK’s What Car? 2026 awards.
Previous sales included 600,000 Fortwos in Italy, 350,000 in Germany, and over 70,000 in the UK. The #2 will be the first vehicle to use Smart’s new Electric Compact Architecture. It targets a 35.7 kWh battery pack, over 60% larger than the 22 kWh in the electric EQ Fortwo, for a potential WLTP range of 186 miles.
The model maintains the Fortwo’s 6.95 m turning circle and features adjustable bench-style seating. Smart is a joint venture between Mercedes-Benz and Geely since 2019. The company waited for battery technology to advance before developing the new two-seater.
The #2 is manufactured in China but aimed at the European market. Ufer stated that electric cars hold a 20% market share in Germany and the share is growing each month. Smart has no current plans to sell vehicles in Japan or the United States due to tariffs.
The company aims to price the #2 no higher than the previous Fortwo model, which started at under £20,000. Smart sells vehicles in 41 countries. Its R&D department can develop a new car in two years using Geely technology.
