Snap Releases First Consumer AR Glasses at $2,195
Snap began taking preorders for its Specs augmented reality glasses priced at $2,195. The devices are scheduled to ship this fall in the US, UK, and France.
WiredSnap began accepting preorders for its Specs augmented reality glasses priced at $2,195, with shipments scheduled for this fall in the US, UK, and France. The company said the glasses represent its first consumer version rather than a developer-only device. A refundable $220 deposit is required to reserve a pair.
The frames weigh between 132 and 136 grams depending on lens size and include prescription inserts. They offer four hours of mixed-use battery life plus four additional charges from the included case. Cameras track hand movements and the surrounding environment, with an indicator light showing when recording is active.
The AR display covers a 51-degree field of view in the center of the wearer’s vision. Supported functions include private display screens, Bluetooth, web browsing, AI-powered visual assistance, and room-aware AR experiences. Snap has not yet detailed which apps or specific features will launch with the device.
The company said its hardware efforts began because no other firm was pursuing its vision for everyday augmented reality computing. Spiegel stated the $2,195 price resulted from efforts to make the device accessible to developers and consumers while avoiding the bulk and cost issues seen with other high-end headsets.
