The Scottish National Party won a fifth consecutive term running the semi-autonomous government in Edinburgh after securing the most seats in the election. Labour suffered heavy losses across the UK with more than 1,400 seats lost in local elections in England.

The party also experienced an historic wipeout in Wales while Reform UK made big gains there and across England. Reform UK secured 34 seats in the Welsh Parliament and snatched more than 1,440 wards in England. The party now controls an additional 14 councils after the vote.

In Scotland the SNP took 58 out of 129 seats. Labour and Reform UK ended level in second place on 17 seats each. Trump who has Scottish family roots did not comment on Reform UK's surge despite previously describing its leader as a friend. The SNP leader called on the UK government to show Scotland more respect after Labour's losses north of the border.

The message followed the outcome that returned the SNP to office after 19 years. Labour's leader took responsibility for the results in a Guardian article. He described the elections as very tough and said the party must reflect and learn lessons from voters' frustration with the status quo.

The Prime Minister pointed to two decades of crises including the 2008 financial crash austerity Brexit Covid and the Ukraine war. He wrote that the response had been to return to a status quo that is not working and pledged to build a stronger and fairer country.

Reform UK's leader said his party was directly taking votes from patriotic old Labour in areas long taken for granted. The comments came after the local election results showed gains from traditional Labour voters.

Labour suffered an historic wipeout in Wales according to early results. The SNP's victory marks the fifth straight term for the party in Scotland. Officials noted the result came despite national challenges for the governing party at Westminster.

Trump's statement praised the SNP leader as a good man who worked hard with the King and Queen of the United Kingdom on tariff relief for Great Scottish Whiskey. The message made no reference to Reform UK's advances. Speculation has grown about cooling relations between Trump and Reform UK's leader who has not been in touch with the President and now differs with him on key policy issues.

Labour's heavy losses prompted its leader to acknowledge deep frustration among voters over the cost of living and lack of hope for improvement. The party lost control of multiple local authorities in England. >"My message to Downing Street tonight is very very clear.

" — SNP leader, 2026 (GB News) >"These were very tough election results. It hurts to lose brilliant candidates and local leaders – friends and colleagues who represent the best of the Labour Party.
