Social Media Consultation Requests at Japanese Consumer Centers Reach 101,045 in 2025

Consultation requests on social media issues at consumer affairs centers across Japan reached 101,045 in 2025, the first time the annual total has exceeded 100,000, according to the 2026 white paper on consumer affairs adopted at a Cabinet meeting on June 12, 2026. The figure was nearly double the level recorded in 2021. Requests from people in their 60s rose by about 4,000 from 2024 to 20,848.
Those in their 50s accounted for 22,291 requests, an increase of about 3,000, while people in their 70s and older made 13,408 requests, also up by about 3,000. People in their 50s and older together filed more than half of all social media-related consultations. Overall consultations at consumer affairs centers totaled about 970,000 in 2025, an increase of about 70,000 from 2024.
7 times higher than in 2021. Requests related to older people, including those with dementia, numbered 10,020. The white paper also presented findings from a Consumer Affairs Agency survey on digitalization and artificial intelligence.
About 25 percent of respondents said they use AI. Twelve percent said they use AI for support in purchasing goods and services.
