Beneficiaries born between the 21st and 31st of any month receive their July 2026 payments on July 22 under the agency's birth-date schedule for most retirement and disability benefits. Those born between the 1st and 10th received payments on July 8, while those born between the 11th and 20th were paid on July 15.

People who began receiving benefits before May 1997 or who receive both Social Security and Supplemental Security Income generally receive payments at the beginning of the month instead.

Benefit amounts vary by earnings history and claiming age. The maximum retirement benefit in 2026 is $5,181 per month for workers who delay claiming until age 70. Those who claimed at full retirement age can receive up to $4,152 per month, while those who claimed at age 62 can receive a maximum of $2,969.

Only around 1 to 2 percent of beneficiaries receive the program's maximum payment, and the average monthly Social Security benefit in June 2026 was around $1,937.
