Socialist-Backed Candidates Defeat Three Incumbents in New York Democratic Primaries

Three candidates backed by New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani defeated Democratic incumbents in primary elections held Tuesday in New York City. The winners included one challenger who defeated Rep. Adriano Espaillat and another who defeated Rep. Dan Goldman.

House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries had endorsed the losing candidates in each race. NRCC spokesman Mike Marinella said three losses in one night is tough and offered thoughts to Jeffries, his candidates, and whatever remains of his influence.

DNC chairman Jaime Harrison posted on X that candidates who do not support the Democratic Party should not seek its nomination or use its resources. He urged those who disagree with party values to build their own organizations instead. The results leave Jeffries without a primary opponent this cycle but facing an emboldened opposition within his own party ahead of future elections.
