Socialist-backed candidates defeated Democratic incumbents in several New York City primaries held this week. The Democratic Socialists of America raised millions while the Democratic National Committee reported being millions in debt. Rep. Dan Goldman lost his primary to Brad Lander by nearly 30 points after receiving 66 percent of the vote two years earlier.
New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani endorsed several winning candidates who have called for abolishing ICE and defunding police.
Establishment response House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries rejected the socialist positions during a CNBC interview. He stated that President Trump currently holds office and that his own record addresses the concerns raised. Sen. John Fetterman criticized some candidates for positions including abolishing ICE and the police. Fetterman said several of the winning candidates hold those views.
Primary results Three Mamdani-endorsed candidates won their races on Tuesday.
One candidate, Darializa Avila Chevalier, described herself as a prison abolitionist during an interview. Sen. Bernie Sanders, Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, and other figures associated with the socialist wing of the party have gained visibility following the results. Ocasio-Cortez said she was encouraged by new candidates entering races for state and federal offices.
