Software engineers accounted for 55% of hiring at major tech companies, up from 46% in 2019, Insider reported. Engineer hiring fell 11% from 2019 levels while overall hiring remained below pre-pandemic marks. Design hiring dropped 48% over the same period.
Product-management hiring declined 39% and marketing hiring fell 36%. The figures point to a narrower focus on technical roles. Insider reported that the pattern has produced leaner organizations built around engineering talent rather than specialized support positions.
