Sony Releases 66.8-Megapixel A7R VI for $4,499.99
Sony's new flagship high-resolution camera features a fully stacked full-frame sensor, improved autofocus, 8K video capability and a new battery system. The A7R VI launches in June at a price $600 higher than its predecessor. The Verge reported the camera also gains a higher-resolution viewfinder, dual USB-C ports and dual gain shooting.
petapixel.comSony announced its new flagship high-resolution camera, the A7R VI. 8 megapixels of resolution and provides up to 16 stops of dynamic range. That resolution is an increase of about six megapixels compared to the A7R V. The stacked architecture enables faster readout speeds that support higher burst rates, better silent shooting and improved video performance, The Verge reported.
99 at launch. The price is $600 more than the A7R V launch price in 2022.
It launches in June. The camera features Real-time Recognition AF+ which improves on the AI-based autofocus system from the A7R V. 44 million dot OLED viewfinder similar to the one on the A1 II and backlight illumination for the camera’s buttons.
The grip is slightly chunkier than previous models to accommodate a new higher capacity battery. The A7R VI uses a new NP-SA100 battery that is not backwards compatible with the previous NP-FZ100 battery. The NP-SA100 battery has a 2670mAh capacity compared to the 2280mAh capacity of the NP-FZ100 battery, a 17 percent increase.
The NP-SA100 battery provides up to 710 shots per charge in the A7R VI. The new Bionz XR2 processor pairs with the stacked sensor to enable continuous blackout-free burst shooting of up to 30 frames per second. For video the A7R VI can record 8K in full sensor width with no cropping at up to 30p.
It can record 8K video for up to two continuous hours. The camera can also record 4K video at up to 120p with no cropping. 5 stops. It has dual USB-C ports for both charging and data.
It is the first Sony Alpha to support dual gain shooting for reduced noise and minimizing loss of shadow detail. The A7R VI uses a new Bionz XR2 processor. The design otherwise resembles the A7R V and other recent Sony cameras.
High-resolution cameras have typically not excelled at video, but the new sensor makes the A7R VI far more versatile in that regard. The price increase mirrors recent jumps on Sony’s flagship A1 II and A9 III bodies.
