South African Group Seeks Constitutional Changes and NGO Oversight
South Africans for Constitutional Reform collected over 30,000 signatures and raised more than 500,000 rand to pursue court action over constitutional submissions. The campaign publicly emphasizes limits on foreigners' access to services while also proposing state oversight of NGOs.
South Africans for Constitutional Reform gathered more than 30,000 signatures on a petition launched in May 2025. The group raised over 500,000 rand in two weeks to fund a court case against Parliament for not considering its constitutional proposals.
The campaign's public statements focus on amending the Constitution's preamble to state that South Africa belongs to its citizens. Additional proposals include restricting foreigners' access to free healthcare, free education, and social grants, and reserving mineral resources for citizens.
The group's chair described another aim in a June 2026 interview. She stated that state oversight of NGOs forms part of the constitutional reform agenda. The campaign has gained support in an environment of public debate over immigration policy. The petition and fundraising efforts occurred between May 2025 and June 2026.
