Ofwat concluded three investigations into repeated water supply interruptions by South East Water. The company will pay a total of £30.5 million funded by shareholders.
The IndependentSouth East Water must pay £30.5 million in redress after Ofwat concluded three investigations into repeated supply interruptions. Ofwat imposed a £22 million fine for failures between 2020 and 2023 that affected more than 286,000 people. A second investigation examined outages from November 2025 to January 2026 in Tunbridge Wells, Kent and Sussex that left up to 70,000 homes without water.
The third followed the downgrading of South East Water’s credit rating by Moody’s in May, which placed the firm in breach of its licence condition. Ofwat will appoint an independent monitor to review the company’s performance improvement plan.5 million package.
The redress package allocates £5 million for free water butts for households, £5 million to accelerate smart metering for businesses and non-household customers, £5 million for on-site storage during peak demand, £13 million toward the turnaround plan and £1 million for storage and works at vulnerable sites.
The package must be funded by shareholders and cannot be passed to customer bills. During the November to January outages, thousands of customers were left unable to access tap water, shower or flush toilets.
Schools closed, some customers canceled work due to childcare issues, and others had difficulty dealing with medical conditions. Ofwat found the company did not communicate clearly and accurately with customers quickly enough and did not provide adequate bottled water supplies.
These failures have caused real disruption and hardship for residents and businesses across many years, and supply interruptions of this scale have happened far too often.
