Foreign Minister Cho Hyun met with top diplomatic envoys from China and Japan to seek closer trilateral cooperation, the ministry said Wednesday. Cho hosted the Chinese and Japanese ambassadors to South Korea as well as senior officials from the Trilateral Cooperation Secretariat at his official residence in Seoul.
The TCS was established in 2011 in Seoul as an intergovernmental body tasked with promoting lasting peace, common prosperity and shared culture among South Korea, China and Japan. At the dinner, Cho expressed hope that the TCS would continue to broaden cooperation.
He called it an important cooperation framework for advancing peace and stability in the region and the practical interests of each nation. The minister also reaffirmed Seoul's commitment to supporting the organization and playing an active role in its work, according to the ministry.
Its activities focus on economic, cultural and people-to-people exchanges intended to build long-term regional stability. The meeting comes as the three countries maintain regular diplomatic contact through various channels despite periodic tensions over historical and territorial issues.
