South Korea will seek to host an Interpol drug response center to address transnational drug crimes, Yonhap reported Wednesday. The government aims to launch the center around the time of Interpol’s general assembly scheduled for Seoul in 2029. Government Policy Coordination Minister Yoon Chang-yul presided over a June 24 meeting of the committee on anti-drug measures where the plan was discussed.
Officials said the center would serve as an international control tower to block drug flows from the golden triangle region that produces 70 percent of drugs worldwide. The golden triangle borders Thailand, Myanmar and Laos. The National Police Agency will push for a letter of intent with Interpol at the organization’s general assembly in December.
