South Korea Probes 58 for Illicit Dongtan Apartment Applications

Authorities are investigating 58 people for using illicit means when applying for apartments in Dongtan, south of Seoul, Yonhap reported Tuesday. Four others have been referred to the prosecution for possible indictment and three booked for probes. The accused employed methods such as falsely shifting the addresses of non-cohabiting family members and registering elderly parents as fake dependents.
Officials said the goal was to increase eligibility and chances of winning the right to buy units in Dongtan 2 New Town. The real estate oversight team under the Prime Minister's Office announced the results of its crackdown on July 14. The effort forms part of measures targeting real estate market-disturbing acts.
"Real estate market-disturbing acts, such as illicit applications and rigging home prices, amount to depriving those in real need of homes of chances to buy homes," said Kim Yong-soo, second vice minister for government policy coordination. He added that related agencies should work closely together to conduct thorough investigations and deal sternly with violators.
The government has designated Dongtan and other areas in Gyeonggi Province as speculative zones subject to tighter lending rules after home prices rose sharply there.
