South Korea’s main opposition party ethics panel reviews discipline for lawmakers who backed Han Dong-hoon or called for leader’s resignation

The main opposition People Power Party held an ethics committee meeting Monday at its Seoul headquarters to review disciplinary requests against several lawmakers, Yonhap reported. The closed-door session marked the committee's first gathering since the June 3 local elections.
Lawmakers who accompanied former party leader Han Dong-hoon on a visit to Daegu before the elections are expected to face review, according to party officials.
Han ran as an independent in the parliamentary by-election for Busan's Buk-A constituency and defeated the PPP candidate Park Min-shik. Lawmakers who have publicly called for the resignation of PPP leader Jang Dong-hyeok are also slated for review. "Those found to have committed serious acts against the party should be permanently barred from rejoining the party, even if it requires revising the party's constitution and regulations," Jang said at an earlier Supreme Council meeting, PPP spokesperson Park Sung-hoon told Yonhap.
Jang attended a separate Supreme Council meeting at the National Assembly in Seoul on the same day. Under PPP rules, the ethics committee can impose measures that range from warnings and membership suspension to recommendations to leave the party or expulsion.
