South Korean Military Recorded 18,951 Cyberattack Attempts in 2025

The South Korean military recorded 18,951 cyberattack attempts in 2025, Yonhap reported, citing defense ministry data presented by Rep. Yu Yong-weon of the People Power Party. The total exceeded the previous five years' figures of 11,700 in 2021, 9,115 in 2022, 13,599 in 2023 and 14,419 in 2024.
Of the 2025 attempts, 18,792 consisted of efforts to compromise websites by seizing administrator privileges, the Cyber Operations Command stated in its report to the lawmaker. The command said limitations in identifying attack sources exist because malicious actors hide their tracks. It added that North Korea appears to have recently advanced its hacking capabilities.
South Korean authorities attribute cyber warfare operations to North Korea's General Reconnaissance and Intelligence Bureau. North Korea called for expanding the agency's functions and missions during a Central Military Commission meeting presided over by Kim Jong-un on July 9, according to its state media.
