President Lee Jae Myung instructed the government on July 14 to examine options for allowing women to take mifepristone safely even before a legal framework exists. The directive was issued during a Cabinet meeting at Cheong Wa Dae in Seoul. Lee noted that South Korean women have been buying the pill directly from overseas to bypass domestic restrictions, which puts their health at risk.
He said the government must enable appropriate use despite potential administrative difficulties. Abortion is not illegal in South Korea, but no legal framework has been set for gestational limits and procedures. Lee described leaving the matter unaddressed as irresponsible and proposed giving doctors discretion to prescribe the pill instead of allowing unregulated overseas purchases.
