SpaceX launched its initial public offering on Friday, creating an estimated 4,000 millionaires among employees and investors. The company marked the event at its headquarters in South Texas rather than at the New York Stock Exchange. The public offering followed the relocation of SpaceX and Tesla operations from California to Texas.
Tesla moved its headquarters to Austin in 2021 after the founder left California in 2020.
A Pacific Research Institute analyst stated that the relocation cost California billions of dollars in economic benefits. The same analyst cited California's tax system and energy costs as factors that prompted companies to leave the state. A California Taxpayers Association official said many SpaceX employees still reside in California and will pay state taxes on gains from the public offering.
The official added that California lost expansion opportunities and associated income that would have remained in the state. The social media company X also closed its San Francisco headquarters and moved operations to Texas. A mural referencing the SpaceX offering appeared in Brownsville, Texas, on the day of the public offering.
