Spain defeated Uruguay 1-0 in a 2026 FIFA World Cup Group H match played in Guadalajara, Mexico, ESPN reported. The sole goal came in the first half when Uruguay goalkeeper Fernando Muslera spilled a shot from Spain's Álex Baena into his own net. The match occurred on a humid, stormy evening.
Uruguay coach Marcelo Bielsa substituted Muslera at halftime after the goalkeeper requested the change. "No, I didn't take [the decision]. It's a decision Muslera took himself," Bielsa said. Spain coach Luis de la Fuente made two alterations to the starting lineup, bringing in Marcos Llorente for Pedro Porro at right back and Mikel Merino for Dani Olmo in midfield.
"Perhaps we weren't as brilliant as we wanted, or as we've shown on other occasions," de la Fuente said. "This was an extremely, an extremely demanding match, quite rigorous. " Spain had previously beaten Saudi Arabia 4-0 in Atlanta and drawn 0-0 with Cape Verde.
Uruguay had drawn both of its earlier group matches against those same opponents. The 2026 World Cup draw had positioned the Spain-Uruguay fixture as one of the more anticipated group-stage games, with the winner positioned to avoid Argentina in the round of 32.
