Spain's Largest Nuclear Plant Set for 2028 Closure Under National Phase-Out Plan

A maintenance worker inspected a generator during a maintenance outage at the Almaraz nuclear power plant in western Spain on April 23, as the facility faces closure in 2028. The Almaraz plant, located in the village of Almaraz, is Spain's largest nuclear power plant and contributes around 7% of Spain's electricity production, Japan Times reported.

Spain's leftist government plans to shut all nuclear reactors by 2035, with the Almaraz plant slated to close in 2028 as part of this initiative.

Spain experienced a nationwide blackout last year, which has rekindled debate over the nuclear phase-out. Recent fuel supply disruptions linked to the war in the Middle East have also contributed to discussions on reassessing nuclear power in Europe, according to Japan Times.
