Special Counsel Asks Supreme Court to Delay Ruling on Former First Lady’s Poll Charges After Husband’s Conviction

A special counsel team asked the Supreme Court on July 14 to postpone its ruling on former first lady Kim Keon Hee's charges of receiving free opinion polls, yna.co.kr reported. The ruling had been scheduled for July 16. The request came one day after a district court convicted former President Yoon Suk Yeol of accepting illegal political funds in the form of free opinion polls.
Special counsel Min Joong-ki's team said it needs time to submit additional opinions that reflect the district court findings in Yoon's trial. Yoon and Kim were indicted separately on charges of receiving 58 opinion polls worth about 570 million won (US$180,754) for free from Myung Tae-kyun. The polls were allegedly provided in exchange for support for former Rep.
Kim Young-sun in the June 2022 parliamentary by-election nomination for the People Power Party. An appellate court cleared Kim of the charges in April 2026. The Seoul district court convicted Yoon of receiving 14 opinion polls for free between April 2021 and March 22, 2022, and sentenced him to two years in prison.
The same court sentenced Myung to 18 months in prison. The special counsel has appealed the appellate court ruling that acquitted Kim.
