Spirit Airlines Cancels All Flights and Begins Wind-Down After Failed $500M Bailout Talks

Spirit Airlines announced on its website Saturday that it had started an orderly wind-down of operations effective immediately. The budget carrier canceled all flights as part of the process, stranding many passengers and workers across the United States. In a statement posted early Saturday morning, the company said all flights have been canceled and guests should not go to the airport.

The shutdown came after talks with the Trump administration about a $500 million bailout collapsed. At the end of April, Spirit had been confident the rescue deal would be finalized imminently.

Spirit cannot reimburse guests for emergency hotel stays or replacement flights. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) union, which represents Spirit staff, called the news devastating for thousands of airline workers.

The union said it will provide additional support to members affected by the shutdown and urged Spirit's leadership and the bankruptcy court to ensure workers receive full severance, back pay, and benefits.

"Our members on the ramp did not cause this failure; corporate mismanagement and poor financial stewardship did," the IAM said in a statement. " The Biden Justice Department blocked Spirit Airlines' merger with JetBlue in 2024, a move that analysts said contributed to its financial pressures.
